‘Cosmic Soul’.

Ou todo o pessoal do Kraut Rock, vide Can, Neu!, e cia. Ltda.]

Chick Corea also brought synthetic masterpieces

Kid Baltan inovou em pleno 1957 com a obra-prima eletrônica ‘Song Of The Second Moon’

ENGLISH

‘Cosmic Soul’. An expression I found out after reasoning about so many music genres with elements in common, genres I like so much, and certainly not by accident. Keep an eye (or both ears) on it, it may be your case as well.

‘Cosmic Soul’. Applied to House Music, you have Fingers Inc. from Larry Heard. Or Virgo, by Adonis, Marshall Jefferson & Vince Lawrence: Avant-garde dance music, Soulful, brilliant. Ahead of their time. Applied to Techno, you’ll find Rhythim Is Rhythim, Model 500, Underground Resistance or Inner City – with innovative timbres, Science Fiction esthetic, Electronic Music made with Soul, concepts that were commonly described as Hi-Tek-Soul. On Electro, you have several other examples, from Drexciya to Dopplereffekt, Japanese Telecom, Dynarec, Moebius-Plank-Neumeier, Ultradyne or even Cybotron. On Drum n’ Bass, you’ll remind of LTJ Bukem, the people from Goodlooking, and of course, 4 Hero. Not to mention as well Dev Pandya (Paradox) and Seba. The examples are countless, literally. (Paradox) or

Want more? On Rock, you will find out about the guitarists Richard Pinhas (which also made avant-garde electronic masterpieces), Manuel Göttsching (author of the majestic ‘E2-E4’) and Brian Eno (that went from Roxy to a unique journey where he was baptized the Godfather of modern Ambient). You can add all the Kraut Rock icons, such as Can, Neu!, etc., which made history through seminal futuristic compositions.

Industrial and Electronic Body Music also got their representants, after all, as Throbbing Gristle would claim, ‘making music through ‘anti-music’ was a bold, ahead of its time concept. Cosey Fanni Tutti and her T.B. partners (Chris Carter, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Peter Christopherson) would lead this esthetic, as well as the experimentalist duo of Cabaret Voltaire (Richard H. Kirk & Stephen Mallinder). Clock DVA was another big example of music made with identity and focused on future.

On Hip Hop? You also have wonderful examples, starting from the talented artists from Stones Throw Records, or even J. Dilla, for example, which built a very diferent (and at the same time original) musical perspective.

It doesn’t matter when the Cosmic Soul music was made. It may be recent, or from the last decades, or even before you can imagine, like did the Electrosonics of Kid Baltan and Tom Dissevelt on the late fifties (will talk further about them soon). ‘Requiem‘ from György Ligeti was also profound and revolutionnary.

Artists from other genres, like the Jazz of Herbie Hancock, George Duke and Chick Corea, or the Funk from George Clinton & Zapp, or even the Disco of Larry Levan & Dexter Wansel were all Soulful and focused on new ideas and future.

This Cosmic Soul signature has no direct dependance on any social, cultural, national or other types of pre-concepts. It’s not related to any geography and it’s timeless: the Cosmic Soul art can be from anywhere, anytime, and it can be from the most different genres. What really counts is the sensation of being outwhere, somewhere else in the Universe, in the vast Space with the privilege of the artistic flavour. Somewhere you can vibrate with the human element, and at the same time, feel like you’re on another Galaxy. After all, it must be Cosmic, and Soul.

If you like this perspective, here are some other fine examples from anytime, anywhere:
